Got Long-Term Care Insurance?
If you don’t have long-term care insurance, you owe it to yourself and your loved ones to take a look. Long-Term Care plans can be crafted to suit a wide variety of needs and budgets. So, don’t assume that it’s too expensive or only covers you if you enter a nursing home. Many plans have benefits for home care, custodial care and assisted living. Purchasing a long-term care insurance plan could be the key to maintaining your independence as you get older.
If you do have a long-term care insurance policy, that is great. Is it a standard plan or partnership plan? This is important because in California (and other states that have partnership plans) long-term care partnership plans give you and your dependents the assurance that catastrophic long-term care expenses will not reduce you to poverty even if you run out of benefits. That is something that a non-partnership long-term care insurance policy cannot offer. Unlike a traditional policy, each dollar your partnership policy pays out in benefits entitles you to keep a dollar of your assets if you ever need to apply for Medi-Cal services.
None of us like to think about needing help as we grow older, but it is better to be prepared. Long-term care insurance is not for everyone, but the only way to determine if it is right for you is to check it out.
